Take Action - 5c Appeal

5c Coin 20c

Have you noticed that you've been carrying around little tuatara and kiwi in your pockets all this time?

Well, they won't be there much longer - from 31 October 2006, we will no longer have 5c coins, which means no more tuatara. And the kiwi is disappearing from the 20c coin too.

We want to make sure they never disappear from the wild and we need your help!

Collection Jar Competition

In May, we launched a competition in Presto (the weekly kids' page in the Dom Post) to design a label to go on a collection jar. So when the silver coins can no longer be used, they can help the Sanctuary look after kiwi, tuatara and the many other endangered animals that live here.

The competition is now closed, so thank you to everyone who took part. There were some really awesome entries.

Collection Jar Label
Ailsa Valentine's winning entry

Congratulations go to 9 year-old Ailsa Valentine from Khandallah, who designed the winning entry. We have turned Ailsa’s design into a label for you to cut out and stick on your collection jar so that wherever you put it, people will know what you’re collecting for.

Now you're ready to start putting aside those 5c and 20c coins. Make sure you get your family and friends collecting too - there will be some neat prizes for the kids who collect the most! Bring your collections along to a Spring Fun Day at the Sanctuary on Saturday September 16th and learn all about the endangered animals your silver coins will be helping to save. Entry will be free for everybody who has collected coins for us. And there will be great prizes for the biggest collections!

If you can’t make it to the Sanctuary on 16 September, not to worry. You can either write us a cheque, or bring in your jar when you are able. Just make sure you tell us your name and address, and that you raised your donation by collecting coins for conservation.

Photography Competition

Photographer Simon Woolf, who judged this competition, was extremely impressed with the high standard of entries, and was delighted by the broad range of subjects.

Here are the 2 winning entries - well done guys!

Weta on wire fence by Miriam Hinder, aged 8, from Papakowhai

Photography Comp Miriam Hinder 8

Simon says:

“Miriam, your photograph of the weta is fantastic.  It is graphic, very different in composition, and shows neat scale.”

Kanono leaf by Zachary George-Neich aged 7, Lyall Bay

Photography Comp Zachary 7 Lyall Bay

Simon says:

“Zachary, you have a real winner here.  The leaf is beautifully simple and has been well-isolated from the background.”

Both winners will receive a voucher for a framed print, kindly donated by Wellington Photo Warehouse.
