New Lizard species found in the SanctuaryTwo species of lizard have been recently found in the Sanctuary by researcher Richard Romijn. He used pitfall traps to capture the copper skink and the ornate skink. Both species are confined to the North Island and offshore islands and due to predators numbers have significantly reduced so they are hard to find. Ornate skinks have been detected in the Sanctuary before but this is the first confirmation of copper skink. For further information, read the full press release. Take a Virtual Sanctuary TourDuring October 2004, the Sanctuary had a special visit from the team at LEARNZ who came to make a virtual Sanctuary tour programme. This company goes all around the country visiting interesting places and putting together virtual tours that are used in schools to allow students to experience something that they wouldn't normally be able to. A mixture of journal entries, video clips, photos, activities, audio conferences and information pages are used to bring the tours alive. Going on the Sanctuary virtual tour allows you to get inside information on the happenings within the Sanctuary. You meet volunteers, employees and trustees, go kiwi listening, see robin chicks and learn about fence monitoring. The LEARNZ team was extremely enthusiastic about their time at the Sanctuary and out of all the many fascinating sites they have visited during the year they have chosen the Sanctuary tour as a demonstration on their website. So instead of having to pay to log on, anyone can log on and go on a virtual Sanctuary tour for free. To access, go to www.learnz.org.nz and Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is highlighted in the second paragraph on the opening page. Enjoy! New Discovery Area opening soon
This newly developed area leads off the Campbell Street track and loops to Round the Lake track. It has been designed to give visitors a tangible, historical experience of what may have existed there during the construction of the upper dam (1906-1908). The Discovery Area has been made possible by the work of the Combined Rotary Clubs of Wellington, who have raised funds, conducted research into the history and also contributed to the physical development of the area, along with Sanctuary staff.
It is hoped that the area will be complete next year with a reconstruction of a tower with viewing platform.
