December 2003

Kaka Day at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary on 21 December 2003

On Sunday, 21 December Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in association with Wellington Zoo are holding Kaka Day. Kracka, the kaka, is going to be at the Sanctuary and one of the Zoo staff will be giving regular talks from 11.30am on the characteristics of kaka and Kracka himself. It'll be lots of fun plus provide the opportunity to see a kaka up close and learn something new about the kaka.

Kracka was one of the kaka that hatched at the Sanctuary last year but due to an accident when fledging is unable to live full time at the Sanctuary and so resides at Wellington Zoo. The Zoo's veterinary staff have managed to rehabilitate Kracka from serious injuries to the point where he can fly and perch pretty well. In the process he has become very used to people.

While you're at the Sanctuary watch out for the other kaka flying freely through the trees as you venture through the valley discovering more native birds, plants and other wildlife. There are two kaka feeding stations in the valley - one located by Tui Terrace and the other below the top dam. These are also good spots to watch out for these cheeky forest parrots.
