Diary PageNovember 2006Volunteer AwardsOn Thursday, 24 November we held our annual Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Volunteer BBQ here at the Sanctuary, and we could not have hoped for better weather. This annual event is the opportunity for the Staff and Trustees to say thank you for the continued support we receive from the volunteers, and it was great to see so many there. We also were able to recognise a number of individuals who received our Volunteer Award for 2006. The awards are given to those individual volunteers who have made a significant contribution during the past year, and the recipients for 2006 were – Don Alexander, Harry & Margaret Shilling, Chris Moore, Kendall Gibson, Phil Austin, Chris Lilly, Meyricke Serjeantson, John Hermans, and Alan Irvine. In addition to these award recipients the Staff and Trustees wish to thank personally all volunteers for their help and support over the years. The success that is Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is due to the efforts from all volunteers past and present. Sanctuary raises over $10,000 in silverWe are delighted to announce our Coins for Conservation Appeal has, to date, raised $10,000 in old silver coins. Over 600 people came along to our Great Coin Count-up on Saturday 16 September, many clutching jars, piggybanks and ice cream tubs full of coins to donate. The Sanctuary’s conservation team were on hand to talk to people about the work they do to ensure iconic animals like tuatara and kiwi don’t disappear from the wild, even though they will no longer be featuring on our silver coins. Two local schools – Chilton St James and Eastern Hutt – both raised over $900. The highest individual donor was Kelly Bechtle-Woods of Mt Victoria, who donated over $130 in loose change. As an appreciation of her efforts, Wellington YHA, Regional Wines, DVS Ltd and Crabtree & Evelyn have all contributed gifts. “I am delighted with the response we’ve had, and would like to thank everybody who has given us their coins. I would also like to remind people that it’s not too late to bring their old coins in, or put them in the collection jars around town. Every cent we receive will go towards the continued ecological restoration of the Sanctuary.” Says Sanctuary CEO Nancy McIntosh-Ward.
