Tuatara numbers to treble at Karori Sanctuary

Mainland New Zealand’s only wild tuatara population will nearly treble thanks to a second transfer of the iconic ‘living dinosaurs’ from Ngati Koata, kaitiaki of New Zealand’s largest tuatara population on Takapourewa/Stephens Island. (More...)

National Frog Week: Special Sanctuary by Night Tours

7.30pm-9.30pm, 22-28 October

New Zealand’s native frogs are nocturnal and notoriously cryptic and our Maud Island frogs are no exception. For a rare opportunity to see these animals, join us on a special Sanctuary by Night tour during Frog Week.

Kerri Lukis, an ecology student from Victoria University (and Sanctuary tour guide), has been closely monitoring our frogs since they were released, and was involved in their capture. As an addition to the normal Sanctuary by Night tour during frog week, she will be giving tour participants a chance to see a Maud Island frog close up (conditions permitting) and will do a short talk about these tiny nocturnal amphibians.

Places are strictly limited, so book now to avoid disappointment. Don’t forget, if you are a Sanctuary member you and anyone booked by and accompanying you get a 50% discount on Night Tours!

Spider Day

11am-3pm, Saturday 27 October

Get up close to some of New Zealand’s native spiders (if you dare!) Te Papa’s very own ‘Spiderman’ Phil Servid and Sanctuary staff will be giving talks about our eight-legged friends.

Prize for the best-dressed ‘Spiderman’ (at 2pm) and a free Explorer Pack for all kids who come in costume.

No need to book. General admission applies. $10/adults. $4/children (5-16). $24/family (2 adults and up to 3 kids). Under-fives and members get in for FREE!
