Maud Island frogs hop from island to mainlandOn 3 October, 30 rare Maud Island frogs were given a new home at Wellington’s world-first Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. While this is not the first reintroduction of this rare amphibian to a mainland site (the Sanctuary achieved that conservation milestone back in February), this is the first time frogs transferred directly from Maud Island have been reintroduced to the mainland. They joined 30 frogs from Canterbury University released at the Sanctuary in February and March, and have boosted the mainland’s population to 60. (More...) Kereru DaySaturday 7 October. 11am – 3pm(rain date Sunday 8 October) As part of the Sanctuary’s involvement in the Kereru Discovery Project and the Karori Festival, we are holding a special event focusing on our endangered native pigeon (kereru). Find out why the kereru was so important to early Maori and is still critical to the wellbeing of our forests. And discover how Karori got its name. Then take the ‘Kereru Cuisine’ trail and see what makes pigeons so plump. Be sure not to miss the flying visit from the Wellington Zoo kereru at 1pm! Sausage sizzle, games, and activities for all the family. General admission fees apply. AGM and Tuatara TalkSunday 1 October 3.30pm – 5pmMain Hall, Victoria University's Karori Campus (formerly College of Education) Donald Street, Karori The AGM is an opportunity to find out how we’ve progressed over the past year and ask any questions you may have. The AGM will last about 30 minutes. The AGM will be followed by a seminar about tuatara by Sue Keall from Victoria University. She will also be bringing Spike the 'travelling tuatara', whom many of you will have met before. This promises to be a very interesting talk about one of the Sanctuary's most popular residents. To continue the tuatara theme, Wellington's Bar Bodega and Tuatara Brewery have very kindly donated some of their locally-brewed beers for us to sample afterwards. There will also be a range of other refreshments and nibbles. In order to anticipate visitor numbers, can you please advise if you will be attending to rsvp@sanctuary.org.nz by Wednesday 27 September. |
