Hundreds turn out to hear about weta

Weta wouldn't win any beauty contests but they still deserve their day in the spotlight. On Sunday, 8 August Karori Wildlife Sanctuary held Weta Day.
Dr George Gibbs, insect ecologist and weta expert from Victoria University thrilled visitors with some fascinating facts about weta. Brave visitors were also able to get up close to real weta - including the giant weta - which was on a day visit to the Sanctuary from Matiu Somes Island. |

"It was great to see so many people interested in weta. Over 1,000 people came along to Weta Day," said Sanctuary Marketing Co-ordinator Geraldine Hulls. The weather was also fabulous, which undoubtedly contributed to the number of visitors.

Bird Song Gully and Binoculars
Bird Song Gully is where you can hear one of eight different bird-calls at the press of a button. It is located only 5 minutes from the main entrance along Lake Road.
If you have had trouble spotting the birds on the Top Dam then the new Binoculars should help you. A large pair of binoculars are now located on the Upper Dam Walkway. |
