Thirty more hihi released

Another 30 hihi (stitchbird) were released at the Sanctuary on Sunday 22 May 2005. These birds joined the 30 hihi that were released at the Sanctuary on 17 February 2005 from Tiritiri Matangi Island, which marked the return of hihi to their natural environment on mainland New Zealand for the first time in over 120 years.
The hihi are most likely to be seen in the valleys, so look out for them along the Te Mahanga and Faultline Tracks. Also keep an eye out for them at the special feeding stations installed to supplement their natural food supply. These are located at the base of the Top Dam, Campbell Street Track, Tui Glen Track and at the bottom and middle of the Beech Track.
Mother’s Day Special Treat – Sunday 8 May 2005
Kids bring your Mum to the Sanctuary on Mother’s Day! As a special thank you to all Mum’s they can get free entry into the Sanctuary on this special day! What a great opportunity to check out some of our new attractions like the scenic boat ride on the lower lake.
Sanctuary Gut Buster Fun Run

Following last years highly successful round the fence fun run, the Combined Rotary Clubs of Wellington, in conjunction with Wellington Harrier Athletic Club, Wellington City Council and Karori Wildlife Sanctuary are again organising the Sanctuary Gut Buster fun run to help raise funds for the Combined Rotary Centennial Project - the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Discovery Area.
The run will be on Sunday 8 May 2005, starting from Ben Burn Park and proceeding around the outside of the Sanctuary's perimeter fence before finishing at the Campbell Street Scout Hall. Walkers will start at 8.30am and runners at 9.30am.
Parts of the course are rather steep, so participants should be physically capable of completing the course. For safety reasons children under 12, bikes, mountain buggies and dogs on a leash will not be permitted on the race course during the event.
If you register before 2 May 2005 there is an early bird special rate of $20 per competitor, $15 per junior competitor or $80 per corporate team (4 members). After 2 May there is an additional charge of $5 per competitor.

More hihi joining the flock at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary
To help celebrate the second release of hihi and to tie into Karori Wildlife Sanctuary’s 10th birthday celebrations the Sanctuary are giving the opportunity for 10 people in the Wellington community to be part of the release event on Sunday 22 May 2005.
