March 2005

2005 Creative Writing Day Winners

On 19th March 2005 a "Creative Writing Day" event was held at the Sanctuary. There was a range of people involved in the day from young children to adults. Some participants then submitted their entries into the writing competition. Judging of the entries was done by a panel of people including presenters from the day and a Sanctuary staff member. The judges were looking for such things originality, freshness of viewpoint, the effort put into each entry, correctness of structure and entertainment value. Flow and rhythm were also important considerations especially in the poetry section.

There were many entertaining and well written entries received and we congratulate everyone who put in the effort to send their writing in - often a brave step. We hope you enjoy reading the two winning entries below.

Adult story writing: 1st - Follow the Cabbage Trees by Isobel McAlpine

Youth story writing: 1st - A day at Karori Sanctuary by Miranda McGregor

Creative Writing Day – Saturday 19 March 2005

  Creative writing day
  Kids at Creative Writing Day

After a very successful Creative Writing day last year, the Sanctuary has decided to repeat the event again. The idea of the day is that anyone, be they a published writer or just a beginner, can come along on Saturday 19 March 2005 and write something inspired by the Sanctuary’s special environment.

Between 11am and 3pm there will be workshops to help you get you started, as well as readings and storytelling sessions. You will have a couple of weeks after the event to polish off your writing and send it in for judging if you choose - there are a range of prizes to be won!

You can download a pre-registration form (pdf) or for further information about the event contact the Sanctuary Educator, Maree Limpus on e-mail education@sanctuary.org.nz or phone (04)-920-9202.

Creative Writing Day Success

With a talented and eclectic collection of writers, even dodgy forecasts and overcast skies could not dampen the second Creative Writing Day - held March 19 - which saw everyone leave smiling (More...).

The Sanctuary of New Zealand Comes One Step Closer

The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary Trust’s proposal for a $16 million world conservation site and benchmark tourism attraction came one step closer to reality today following the Wellington City Council Strategy and Policy Committee’s recommendation to the Council to include an $8 million loan in the 2005/2006 Draft Annual Plan.

Visitors enjoy Tuatara Day

“It feels like elastic” was the comment that one keen youngster made, when visitors were given the chance to gently touch Victoria University’s tuatara, Oliver, at Tuatara Day, Saturday 5 March (More…).

Stepping out!

The Sanctuary is participating in the March 2005 Stepping Out! promotion again and there are numerous other regular walking group programmes, walking events and self guided walk opportunities. For example, there's a landfill walk, which includes a unique opportunity to see behind the scenes at the southern landfill. Maybe the rooftop Wellington walk is for you, allowing access to various Wellington rooftops and some interesting perspectives of the city.

Stepping Out! 2005 also includes two free work shops on 20th March 2005 - "Beginners guide to setting up a walking group" and "Growing and developing your walking group".

To find out more about the programme you can pick up a Stepping Out! brochure which will be available mid February 2005 from the Wellington City Council swimming pools, recreation centres and libraries or check it out online at www.steppingout.feelinggreat.co.nz. You can also call the Wellington City Council on 04 499 4444 for more information.
