Creative Writing Day - Saturday 20 March 2004, 10am to 4pm

Do you like to write? You're invited to be a part of the first ever Creative Writing Day at the Sanctuary. It's a chance for you to get ideas and get inspired in the special environment of the Sanctuary. Whether you are a published writer, or just a beginner, no matter what your age, you're invited to take part. There will be workshops from publishers and writers, guided tours, readings and storytelling sessions throughout the day.

Hundreds attend writing event at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary

A large turnout for the first-ever Creative Writing Day at Karori Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday exceeded the expectations of organisers. Nearly 400 people visited the Sanctuary on the day and many took part in the workshops and readings, says event organiser Keith Lyons.

Creative Writing Day Winners

On the 20th March, on a perfect late summer day, a Creative Writing Day was held at the Sanctuary. There was a range of people involved in the day from small children to adults. Participants then submitted their entries for judging. Adult Poetry was judged by Jenny Bornholt, Adult Fiction and Non-Fiction by Pippa Wetzell and the Child and Youth sections by Majoree Gee. The winners were presented with their prizes at an afternoon tea and prize-giving held at the Sanctuary recently.

The Sanctuary is pleased to announce the prize winners were:

Tuatara Day - Sunday, 7 March 2004

Come along and learn about the unique tuatara, a lizard pre-dating the dinosaurs! Oliver, the tuatara from Victoria University is going to be at the Sanctuary and there will be regular talks between 12 noon and 3pm on the characteristics of tuatara. It'll be lots of fun, plus you'll have the opportunity to see a tuatara up close and learn something new about the species.

It's going to be a great day out . so pack a picnic, round up the whole family and come along to the Sanctuary. Entry Fees $7 Adult, $3 Child, $17 Family (2 adults, 3 children), no charge for Sanctuary members or pre-schoolers. From March the open hours change to daily from 10am to 5pm. Visitor Information Line phone 04 920 2222. Visitor Centre located at the end of Waiapu Road, Karori (first left after the Karori tunnel).
