Sanctuary Sundowners: Poetry & Picnics

Sunday 3 February. 2pm-8pm

Enjoy an afternoon of poetry and prose readings from acclaimed writers with a passion for the land, including:

  • Jenny Bornholdt - Former Poet Laureate
  • David Young - author of 'Our Islands, Our Selves'
  • Dinah Hawken - recent 'Poet in Residence' at the Botanic Gardens
  • Hilary Elfick - UK writer/broadcaster and author of 'An Ordinary Storm'
  • Lynn Davidson - Creative Writing Tutor at Whitirea Polytechnic
  • Keith Westwater - Lower Hutt-based poet
  • Hinemoana Baker - Paekakariki-based writer/performer

Readings begin at 4.30pm. There will also be activities for budding poets from 2pm, including talks with the writers and a chance to contribute to our 'Poet-Tree'. A perfect excuse to round up your friends and family, pack a picnic and enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon.

No need to book. General admission fees apply. $12/adults. $5/children (5-16). $29/family (2 adults and up to 3 kids). Under-fives and members get in for FREE!

Waitangi Day - Free Ranger Talks

Wednesday 6 February. 10am-8pm (last admissions 7pm)

Round up your friends and family, pack a picnic and linger a little longer this Waitangi Day. Our Ranger Guides will be giving free talks too!

Valentines Day - Adults Only Evening

Thursday 14 February. 5pm-8pm (last admissions 7pm)

What could be more romantic on Valentines Day than a twilight stroll around the Sanctuary? Take a free cruise across the lower lake on our unique electric boat, and relax to the sounds of gentle flute music and the magical dusk chorus. Feel free to bring your own picnic and wine.

 

 

 

Giant weta encounters

Sunday 17 February. 2pm-4pm

Join us at Tui Terrace where we will be releasing 98 giant weta from Matiu/Somes Island as part of a programme to re-establish this endangered species on the mainland. (More...)
