Sixty stitchbirds from Tiri Tiri Matangi are to be transferred to the Sanctuary as part of a national stitchbird recovery programme recently announced by the Prime Minister.

“This is a significant event for New Zealand and for the Sanctuary. Stitchbirds have been extinct from the wild on the mainland of New Zealand for 120 years. We hope that the stitchbirds will flourish in the safety of the Sanctuary, adding to our visitors appreciation of our natural heritage, right in the middle of a major city”, says Sanctuary Chief Executive Nancy McIntosh-Ward.

Rare birds now on show

Visitors can now get up close to the birds at the Sanctuary due to a new 'Bird Cam'. Through the use of remote camera's live images of the wildlife are now being relayed to television monitors for Sanctuary visitors to view.

A large permanent 'Bird Cam' monitor is located on the main Lake Road just a few metres up from the Visitor Centre. Smaller roving monitors will be moved around various locations inside the Sanctuary depending on where the activity is happening in the valley.
