Visitor & Education Centre - OPENING NOVEMBER 2009Work is now well underway on our new world-class Visitor and Education Centre. The centre, which is due to open in November 2009, is the biggest tourism initiative of its kind currently under development in New Zealand, and is set to be the country’s flagship environmental education and eco-tourism facility. It will use state-of-the art interactive exhibitions to tell the story of New Zealand’s unique natural history from ‘the day before humans arrived’ through to the groundbreaking conservation techniques of today. It will also provide a much needed all-weather facility and cafe.
The new Centre is by far the most significant development the Sanctuary has undertaken since its inception, and the biggest project of its kind in Wellington since Te Papa was opened 10 years ago. It will engage visitors in the uniqueness and vulnerability of New Zealand’s native wildlife and ecosystems and inspire them to help make a positive change. As soon as you step through the doors of the exhibition hall it will be like arriving on another planet: New Zealand 1,000 years ago. A totally immersive sound and light show heralds the arrival of humans and the accidental catastrophe that followed. Upstairs you see the fragments of old New Zealand that remained, and how they might be made whole again in the future.
Take a sneak peek! From July 2008 a 3D scale model of the new Centre and a small display will give visitors a sneak preview of what's happening behind the fence.
