Volunteer Work
Right from the outset, during the conception of the sanctuary and early
work in the valley, right up to the present day with the day to day
activities performed, volunteers have been an integral part of Karori
Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary would not exist and would not be the
success it is at now, without the dedication and immeasurable hours put in
by community organisations and individuals.
1996 saw the first volunteer involvement with trained guides taking tours
through the area. From then on volunteer groups have grown and been
developed to a stage where volunteer work now includes:
- Guiding and Hosting
- Avi-aiding
- Restoration and Gardening
- Fence Monitoring
- Office Support and mailouts
- Membership Support
- Web-site Development
- Writing and Publishing

The wide range of activities requires a variety of skills and
commitment and therefore anyone is encouraged to help out. Because the
Sanctuary vision spans 500 years, teams will be continually evolving and
new units being created to meet the conservation and restoration needs of
the valley. However with nearly 400 volunteers currently enrolled at
Karori Wildlife Sanctuary there may not be immediate opportunities to get
involved. Some volunteer groups have waiting lists; due to numbers of
current volunteers or because the relevant training sessions have not yet
begun.
