Resource Packs
The Karori Sanctuary provides free, curriculum-linked resource packs to assist teachers to meet achievement objectives across a number of curriculum areas.
Teachers can download resource packs/material by following the simple
instructions below. If you have trouble downloading any of the resource
material or you would like to discuss the development of material on a
special topic, please contact our educator directly at education@sanctuary.org.nz.
Downloading Resource Material
If you are a teacher and would like to download and print the resource
material yourself:
- Select your resource pack from the list below.
- Complete the registration form.
- If the material you are downloading has been developed by Karori Sanctuary staff you will be asked to register your name, school and teaching level.
- To ensure that the Karori Sanctuary continues to provide a quality education experience you may be contacted for feedback about the programme and our website. Any information you provide is confidential and will not be used for any other purpose. You will be asked to register your name, school and teaching level.

Students learn about the effect pest species are having on New Zealand native animals, the importance of trapping and monitoring, and pest eradication from the valley. They also learn about the innovative Sanctuary fence and investigate the benefit of this well-known technological advance on the environment.  |

Students learn about changing land-uses within the valley, from traditional Māori uses to farming, gold mining, water reservoir, conservation and beyond. They visit an historic gold mine and dam, experience the changing forest, and learn how human impact on the environment can be both positive and negative.  |

Students explore the concepts of water use, understand the need for clean water for all forms of life. Visit some historical sites within the valley and learn about the effects these activities have historically had on the area.  |

Students focus on understanding how different species feed and the different food sources within the valley. Discover and identify a range of birds, and match birds’ features to feeding techniques. Construct food chains to demonstrate the interdependence of organisms.  |

| Restoration - a 500-Year Vision |

Students are introduced to the concept of restoration and the Sanctuary’s role in conservation awareness and species recovery. This broad-spanning programme covers simple life cycles, how survival of plants and animals depends on successful competition for resources, different soil features and their importance, and habitat protection versus human needs.  |

This unit was developed by Te Kete Ipurangi – The Online Learning Centre. Students learn how people’s activities influence places and the environment and are influenced by them and how the ideas and actions of people in the past change the lives of others.  |

On this enthralling NCEA – based programme, students learn about the impacts of introduced pests on native species, and how pests are being controlled. | This programme offers an in-depth field trip examining the geological features and processes that have created this catchment. This field trip is a mini, mountains to the sea activity from the Brooklyn wind turbine, through the Sanctuary to the sea, visiting points of interest along the way. | Stream study - ‘What lurks beneath?’ |

| What is a stream ground? This in-depth NCEA-based programme guides students into investigating the inter-relationships and patterns in an ecological population or community. Students get to sample macro invertebrates in the Sanctuary stream and identify and record different biotic factors. They prepare for following in-class assessment. Visit resources and staff support include stream sampling equipment and expertise to use it, pre/post visit lessons, and background data on species. Resource pack available on request. |

This unit was developed by Te Kete Ipurangi – The Online Learning Centre. Students will be able to explain why places such as Karori Sanctuary are significant for people. They will learn about the physical environment of New Zealand and how people interact with the landscape and explore the relevance of the Sanctuary’s location and significance of important natural and cultural features of the landscape.  |
