School Visits

Karori Sanctuary offers a variety of programmes and supporting resource materials that provide students and teachers with positive and inspiring environmental experiences: in, about and for the environment. We are an LEOTC provider and have qualified, experienced educators to work with your group.

We provide an exciting, integrated learning opportunity
EXPLORE - EXPERIENCE - LEARN

The Karori Sanctuary is an internationally recognised community conservation project. It demonstrates science, technology and the community working together to create a safe haven for native wildlife.

The Karori Sanctuary is a living classroom and our programmes:

  • Offer fun hands-on learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.
  • Correlate to many of the achievement objectives in the National Curriculum documents.
  • Are motivating and innovative.
  • Allow students to gain knowledge, understanding and skills about many aspects of our unique natural environment.
  • Provide positive environmental experiences for students and teachers alike.
  • Use our own curriculum-linked resource material before, during and after a Sanctuary experience.

We also offer:

  • Tailor-made experiential programmes to meet your needs.
  • A rich history of gold mining and early dam building.
  • Stories and evidence of human interaction with the environment since the 1800s and their impacts on today.
  • The opportunity to stand on the Wellington Fault line and learn about some of its impacts – past and present.
  • Rare native wildlife such as kaka, pateke/brown teal and tieke/saddleback and hihi/stitchbird.
  • The opportunity to experience and learn about New Zealand bush including traditional uses of plants and impacts of weeds.
  • The chance to get up close and personal with two types of weta – cave weta and the Wellington tree weta.
  • Revolutionary technology for wildlife protection.
  • Learning about what makes New Zealand wildlife so unique, special and vulnerable.
  • Great inspiration for art, language and music.
