Visiting Us

A visit to Karori Sanctuary is a special experience. Nowhere else in New Zealand can you experience many of New Zealand's rarest birds, insects and reptiles living freely in their natural environment, just be only minutes from downtown. Explore our unique, award-winning conservation safe-haven and be part of our incredible 500-year journey.

Karori Sanctuary is open 364 days a year (closed Christmas Day).

For first time visitors we recommend a guided tour to make the most of your visit. Let one of our experienced guides take you on a fascinating two hour tour, learn about New Zealand’s treasured animals and plants and find out why Karori Sanctuary is truly unique and a world-first eco-attraction. Tours are available day and night.

If you fancy wandering on your own then we have over 34 km of walking tracks through regenerating forest to explore. Armed with a map you choose where to go – you might like to check out the many unique and interactive attractions we offer.

We are currently undertaking a major building development at the Sanctuary entrance. Our new Visitor & Education Centre is due to open in Summer 09/10. During this period, entry to the Sanctuary will be via a temporary access track. Wheelchair users or people with strollers may require assistance. Our staff will be more than happy to help.
