Getting to the Sanctuary

Karori Sanctuary is just a few minutes drive from central Wellington.

Access to the Sanctuary is available at the Visitor Centre at the end of Waiapu Road. For biosecurity reasons, this is the only public entrance.

Directions from the Beehive/Parliament in central Wellington:

  • Drive up Bowen Street towards Thorndon
  • Turn left at intersection at top of Bowen Street into Tinakori Road / Glenmore Street
  • Travel past Botanic Gardens to the top of Glenmore Street
  • Turn left at intersection and go through Karori Tunnel (please note that the tunnel has a height clearance of 3m - buses over this height will need to take an alternative route - contact us for assistance).
  • After the Karori Tunnel, take first left into Waiapu Road
  • The Sanctuary’s visitor centre is at the end of Waiapu Road.

Free carparking is available outside the visitor centre, at the end of Waiapu Road, whilst you are visiting the Sanctuary.

Karori Sanctuary is well-served by the city’s public bus network. The following bus services will take you past the entry to Waiapu Road:

  • # 3 to Karori Park (every 15 minutes at peak times)
  • # 22 and # 23 to Mairangi (every half hour)
  • # 21 to Wrights Hill (hourly Monday-Friday)
  • # 18 to Karori Park via Victoria University (every half hour, Monday-Friday)

For further information visit www.metlink.org.nz. Bus stops are located adjacent to the entrance to Waiapu Road – just 5 minutes walk from the Sanctuary’s visitor centre.
