The Wednesday Gardening Group

Volunteer Janet Tremewan at ZEALANDIA The Karori Sanctuary Experience Wellington New Zealand

Every Wednesday, between 10 am and 12 noon, a small but dedicated group of volunteers roll up their sleeves and get down on their knees, trowels at the ready.

The Wednesday Gardening Group has been going for at least ten years although, like many volunteer groups, the focus has shifted over time. In the early days, the work mainly involved helping out in the native plant nursery that was then situated where the Round Lawn is, making compost, planting and watering. Now the group mainly focuses on maintaining the native plant beds that are situated along Lake Road and the Wetland.

Like with the Wednesday Work Group, there is a strong sense of camaraderie in this group. The social aspect is as important as the volunteering. Numbers vary from week to week, but every Wednesday without fail someone from the group has shown up.

The Trust would like to thank Elizabeth Bradford, Ann Townsend, Margaret and Harry Shilling, Janet Tremewan (pictured), Bob and Mary Watson, Isabel Robinson, Jennifer Bennett, and Janeen Gillies.
